    Introduction
      What are histories?

Histories are files in your computer that record your activities. When found or recovered by a third party, these files can be used to reconstruct what you're working on, what you do online, and what applications you use.

      Why are histories dangerous?

A determined investigator can examine your history files and know what you've done with your computer. The websites you've visited, the files you've edited, and even your usernames and passwords can easily be found and exploited. Hackers can steal your identity and personal information to use for their benefit, and a third party can monitor your activities without your knowledge. If you want to keep your information private, you must clean up your tracks before they can be used against you.

      What is ZeroNetHistory 2005?

ZeroNetHistory 2005 is the ultimate defense against identity theft - its superior scan-and-clean engine and multiple functions completely protect you from identity theft. ZeroNetHistory 2005 securely deletes your files and folders through file shredding, outwitting even popular file recovery software. It erases all of your computer tracks, from document and search histories to Internet cache and Windows swap files.

How does ZeroNetHistory 2005 delete files securely?

Microsoft Windows uses a file called an Allocation Table as a directory of all the files you have on your hard drive. When you delete a file normally (using the Delete key or Recycle Bin), Windows changes the entry in the allocation table that points to that file. The entry will now say that your file is gone, and it does not appear in your hard drive. However, Windows did not erase the actual information itself - meaning that anyone with a file recovery program can retrieve what you have deleted.

ZeroNetHistory 2005 removes this flaw by directly overwriting the file's contents in your hard drive. Not only that, but it continues the process several times - you can overwrite a file with a Low, Normal, or High level of deletion, depending on the security level you choose. This process is called 'file shredding', based on the Gutmann algorithm, and it ensures that your files are deleted for good.

    TROUBLESHOOTING
I can't seem to download ZeroNetHistory 2005. Why?

If you are using Norton Internet Security 2004, you are probably blocked by Norton's firewall. To download the installer, close Norton before downloading ZeroNetHistory.

While doing an Erase, a dialog box informed me I was running low on disk space. What does this mean?

If you encounter a 'low disk space' warning, it only means that ZeroNetHistory 2005 is temporarily using your free space to erase all junk data from your computer. This is only a temporary state as your computer will go back to normal the instant the Erase is completed or canceled.

When cleaning my Internet History, the number of files I cleaned was higher than the number of files found during the scan. Why?

Internet History cleaning sometimes cleans more than what it previously detected in the scan because it re-scans the history during cleaning. If you were connected to the Internet and surfing online, the number of Internet History files may have increased between scanning and cleaning.

Why does the Erase feature take more time than the other scans?

Erasing traces from your computer means that ZeroNetHistory 2005 is shredding your free space, overwriting the junk data several times beyond recovery. Depending on the size of your hard drive and the speed of your computer, this feature will take more time than the others because of the large amount of data that needs to be erased.

When I shred a shortcut or an Internet bookmark, why does a different file appear in the Shred Window?

Using the Browse window to shred a shortcut instead adds the target file or executable to the shred list. Adding Internet bookmarks through the Browse button also results in a different name than what appears on the shortcut link. To shred a shortcut or bookmark, drag and drop it to the 'Delete Permanently' icon or the shred window.

I want to shred a file that is both hidden and read-only / system and hidden / system and read-only. Which security setting will ZeroNetHistory 2005 use?

When deleting files that share more than one of the following properties (System files, hidden files, and read-only), ZeroNetHistory 2005 will use the settings of the property with the highest priority, in this order: System, hidden, and read-only.

What happens if I shred a folder with hidden or read-only files inside?

If the folder's property is set to normal (not hidden or read-only), it can still be shredded even if it contains hidden or read-only files which are protected by ZeroNetHistory 2005. This is because ZeroNetHistory 2005 prioritizes the property of the item being shredded first (if it is normal, hidden, or read-only). Always check the contents of a folder before shredding it.

Why can't I shred some system files?

Windows has a guarding mechanism that regenerates some missing system files. Though ZeroNetHistory 2005 actually shreds the file, Windows creates a new file to replace the lost one. An example of an important system file that regenerates is Notepad.exe.

I right-clicked on the user interface after cleaning and the program told me I still had files left.

Running programs during a cleaning process and then right-clicking on the user interface will cause ZeroNetHistory 2005 to refresh its results. New histories and tracks might be made by your other running programs, and these files will be counted in the refreshed UI. To avoid this inconsistency, do not run history-creating programs while ZeroNetHistory 2005 is cleaning.

What happens if I schedule two scans at the same time?

ZeroNetHistory 2005 will still run both scheduled scans, one after the other.

When I cascade or tile all windows on my desktop, sometimes ZeroNetHistory 2005 gets clipped.

To preserve ZeroNetHistory 2005's unique user interface, we have restricted sizing of the application. When you use the Windows command to cascade or tile your program windows, and the window is smaller than ZeroNetHistory 2005, the program will appear to be 'clipped' around the edges. If you wish to return ZeroNetHistory 2005 back to normal, double-click on the ZeroNetHistory 2005 icon in the system tray or right-click on the user interface to restore the application.
